Kate Tracey, Sam Boswell and Declan Rix return in search of Super Saturday betting angles on the latest episode of Weekend Winners.
On the show, the panel also find some Cheltenham Festival ante-post angles, with the Prestbury Park showpiece now just five weeks away.
During this week’s episode, the trio take aim at the William Hill Hurdle, which features a star-studded field, including Secret Squirrel, Navajo Indy and last year’s winner Iberico Lord.
Kate Tracey
“I’m returning to the trends and the horse that came out on top was Fiercely Proud. The only negative is that he was a winner last time out, which hasn’t been a positive over recent years with just one of the last six winners of the race managing to win last time out.
You want a six-year-old rated 133-138 or 141-146, held up ideally having had three runs coming into the race and placing or running well enough in a handicap hurdle, which of course he won at Ascot recently. He did get a 9lb hike for it but hopefully there’s more to come from him and this race isn’t a plan B default.”
Declan Rix
“This is an absolutely bonkers race. I thought Secret Squirrel was a little bit short, despite being a bit of a rockstar. I think the best horse, theoretically, in the race is Lump Sum. He’s got to carry top weight which will be a difficult task but the Sir Gino form is obviously good. He hasn’t jumped as well as he can this season, he’s quite a big horse but I’m not afraid of him carrying top weight as he’s absolutely built for it.
“Getting back on soft ground will definitely suit as a son of Authorized. Dylan Johnston will take 3lb off his back and I hope he allows him to stride on – as he’s an Authorized it doesn’t matter what you do, he won’t learn to settle. It’s going to be tough but he is the class act in the field and at 20/1 (on Friday morning) I can easily see him running a big race.”
Sam Boswell
“Navajo Indy has been put up 7lb for his win at Windsor but I still think there’s a bit of yardage in the mark. It’s a case that the track didn’t suit him and in hindsight I’m disappointed he ran there. The second went to Leopardstown and went off 7/2 for a very competitive handicap and ran a respectable sixth, so I think there’s more to come and I’d like to think this has been a bit of a target.
I’m going to forgive the Windsor run and back at Newbury will suit. He was a little bit bigger in the week and I hope we’ll get a cheeky drift nearer the off. I think Tom Symonds has a really smart horse and, although 11/2 (on Friday morning) is as short as I’d want to play, I’ll be getting involved.”
