More than three dozen people have died in an accident involving a bus in southern Mexico, according to local reports.

Regional authorities and businesses said the bus involved was travelling between Cancun and Tabasco.

Bus operator Tours Acosta said around 44 passengers were onboard the vehicle at the time of the incident.

It added that it was “profoundly sorry about what happened” on Facebook, and said it was working with authorities to find out what happened and that the bus had been travelling within speed limits.

Javier May Rodriguez, governor of Tabasco, also said on social media that the incident took place near Escarcega.

“We are coordinating with federal and Campeche authorities to provide the required assistance,” he said. “The secretary of government is closely following up on the situation.”
