Former Australian Test cricketer Stuart MacGill found guilty of taking part in the supply of cocaine | World Newsnews24

Former Australian Test cricketer Stuart MacGill has been found guilty of taking part in the supply of cocaine in Sydney.

He had pleaded not guilty to a single charge of participating in the supply of a prohibited drug.

Jurors heard the 54-year-old former spin bowler – who played 44 Tests for Australia and took 208 wickets – was a regular user of cocaine and bought the drug from a dealer for several years.

MacGill admitted using cocaine and introducing his partner’s brother Marino Sotiropoulos to his drug dealer, identified in court only as ‘person A’.

He maintained his involvement was limited to the introduction at his Sydney restaurant in April 2021.

Jurors at New South Wales District Court heard the illicit exchange of 330,000 Australian dollars (£160,000) for a kilogram of cocaine was struck.

The jury cleared MacGill of involvement in the commercial supply of the drug.

But he was convicted on the alternative charge of knowingly taking part in the supply of a prohibited drug.

He will be sentenced in May.

The former leg-spin bowler made headlines in 2021 when he was allegedly kidnapped, assaulted and threatened with a gun before being released. New South Wales state police arrested and charged four men in relation to the incident.

MacGill’s international career from 1988 to 2008 was largely overshadowed by fellow Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne, who is second on the list of all-time leading wicket-takers in Test cricket.
