Cheaper Apple Watch SE? Apple faces cost and design roadblocks, reports Mark Gurmannews24

Apple is said to be working on a refreshed version of its affordable Apple Watch SE, but reports suggest the company is struggling with the design of the upcoming model. According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the tech giant is exploring the use of a plastic body for the next-generation Apple Watch SE, deviating from the aluminium chassis used in previous models.

Gurman, in his weekly Power On newsletter, states that Apple’s design team is reportedly unhappy with the appearance of the plastic-bodied Watch SE. Meanwhile, the company’s operations team is encountering difficulties in producing the case at a lower cost than aluminium. If the manufacturing process remains expensive, the goal of making a more affordable Apple Watch SE may not be achievable.

The current Apple Watch SE (2nd Generation) was introduced in 2022 and continues to feature an aluminium frame, maintaining a premium feel despite being positioned as a budget-friendly option. If Apple can successfully reduce production costs, a plastic Watch SE could allow the company to target a broader audience in the lower-end market. However, no official confirmation has been made regarding an updated SE model.

Beyond the Watch SE, Apple is also working on advanced health features for its more premium smartwatches. Reports indicate that the company is making progress in developing a blood pressure monitoring system, though challenges remain in ensuring accuracy. This feature, if successfully implemented, could significantly enhance the Apple Watch’s health tracking capabilities.

Additionally, the next-generation Apple Watch Ultra may arrive with enhanced connectivity, including support for 5G RedCap and satellite communication. These improvements could make the smartwatch more appealing to outdoor enthusiasts and professionals who require reliable connectivity in remote locations.

Apple is not expected to unveil new smartwatch models until September, aligning with the launch of its next iPhone generation. More details on the updated Watch SE and other smartwatch advancements may emerge in the coming months.
