Auburn was in control for most of the first three quarters of Sunday’s Elite Eight game against Michigan State, but it was hit with an unfortunate blow roughly midway through the second half.
Star forward Johni Broome departed the game after landing awkwardly on his right elbow. Broome suffered the injury after contesting a shot, falling down and appearing to hyperextend his right elbow. As Auburn drove up the court with the ball following the miss, Broome remained down on the court in pain before play stopped.
After a few moments, Broome was able to get up and walk off the court under his own power. However, he went straight to the locker room.
Broome, who was unanimously voted an All-American and is one of the two top candidates for National Player of the Year, had 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting to go with 12 rebounds at the time of the injury. Auburn held a 50-40 lead with 10:37 remaining when Broome went to the locker room.
There is a slight chance Broome could still return to the game, but he told his teammates to finish the game for him, according to the CBS broadcast.
This is a developing story.
