India star Jasprit Bumrah has beaten England duo Joe Root and Harry Brook to be crowned ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year.
Root was the top run-scorer in the world in 2024, with 1,556 at an average of 55.57, while fellow Yorkshireman Brook hit 1,100 including the only triple century of the year.
But both men found themselves eclipsed by India seamer Bumrah in the International Cricket Council annual awards, having claimed a remarkable 71 wickets at 14.92 in just 13 appearances. England newcomer Gus Atkinson was his closest competition with 52 scalps.
“Test cricket has always been a format I hold close to my heart, and to be recognised on this platform is truly special,” said Bumrah.
“This award is not just a reflection of my individual efforts but also of the unwavering support of my team-mates, coaches, and fans who continue to believe and inspire me every day.
“Representing India is a privilege I deeply cherish, and knowing my efforts bring smiles to people around the world makes this journey even more special.”
Smriti Mandhana made it a double success for India as she was voted as the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year, beating Laura Wolvaardt, Annabel Sutherland and Chamari Athapaththu.
Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai is the new Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year.
England dominate Test Team of the Year
England newcomer Jamie Smith has joined team-mates Root, Brook and Ben Duckett in the ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year.
Wicketkeeper-batter Smith is the only player to have made his debut in 2024 to be selected after scoring one century and four fifties across his first nine matches, making 667 runs in total.
Root (1,556 runs), Duckett (1,149) and Brook (1,100) starred with the bat in Test cricket last year and are joined in the top six by India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal (1,478), New Zealand’s Kane Williamson (1,013) and Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis (1,049).
The bowlers are India’s Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah, Australia’s Pat Cummins and New Zealand’s Matt Henry, with no place for England’s Atkinson despite the Surrey seamer taking 52 wickets, including a hat-trick against New Zealand, and scoring a maiden hundred against Sri Lanka since winning his first cap in July.
There are no South Africans in the XI despite the Proteas reaching the World Test Championship Final.
In the women’s ODI team of the year, England wicketkeeper Amy Jones was selected alongside spinner Sophie Ecclestone and seamer Kate Cross.
