Bus flips over on highway in South Africa, killing 12 and injuring dozens | World Newsnews24

At least 12 people died and 45 were injured when a bus flipped over on a highway in South Africa, throwing passengers from the vehicle.

Emergency services were at the scene in Johannesburg on Tuesday trying to lift the bus back on to its wheels to see if any more people were trapped underneath it.

“On arrival we found patients lying across the road,” said William Nthladi, a spokesperson for the city’s Ekurhuleni Emergency Management.

The crash happened early on Tuesday morning on a road near the city’s OR Tambo International Airport.

The bus had been carrying people from the township of Katlehong, east of Johannesburg, officials said, when it flipped over near the edge of the highway.

Mr Nthladi confirmed 12 people were declared dead at the scene by paramedics. Injuries among the survivors ranged from serious to critical, he said.

The driver was among those taken to the hospital.

No other vehicle was involved in the crash and officials haven’t yet been able to determine the cause.
