The Pope has ‘isolated’ breathing crisis in hospital, Vatican sources say | World Newsnews24

The Pope has had an “isolated” breathing crisis as he is treated in hospital, Vatican sources say.

The sources said: “This afternoon, after a morning spent alternating respiratory physiotherapy with prayer in the chapel, the Holy Father presented an isolated attack of bronchospasm which, however, led to an episode of vomiting with inhalation and a sudden worsening of his respiratory condition.

“The Holy Father was promptly aspirated and started on non-invasive mechanical ventilation, with a good response on gas exchange.

“The Holy Father always remained vigilant and oriented, collaborating in the therapeutic manoeuvres.

“The prognosis therefore remains reserved. In the morning he received the Eucharist.”

The sources admitted it had been “a hard day” and said Francis “looks depressed”.

The crisis, which started around 1400 local time, was resolved in the afternoon.

Pope Francis is now using a different type of ventilation “on nose and mouth,” the sources added.

Doctors will need between 24 and 48 hours to understand how this crisis will impact his condition, but they reported the Pope is conscious and “in good spirits”.
