The US Open is to expand its main draw to 15 days, kicking off a day earlier on Sunday for the tournament’s first weekend start in the Open Era.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced the move on Wednesday, with the schedule change seeing the men’s and women’s singles first rounds play out over three days from Sunday August 24.
The added day will allow main draw access for another 70,000 attendees or more at Flushing Meadows, after a third straight year of record-breaking attendances in 2024.
The Sunday opener will include six new ticketed sessions, with day and night sessions for the famed Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium.
The final Grand Slam of the year will once again be broadcast exclusively live on Sky Sports, with coverage running from Sunday August 24 through to Sunday September 7.
Across Sky Sports’ channels, as well as our digital and social channels, tennis fans can enjoy extensive coverage of the final Grand Slam of 2025, including both the men’s and women’s singles, alongside the respective doubles tournaments, mixed doubles, juniors, and wheelchair competitions.
There will be a daily live text commentary on the Sky Sports website and app, as well as live scores, reports, analysis, features and videos.
Sinner and Sabalenka go in as defending champs
Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka will return to Flushing Meadows as defending champions, both having clinched maiden US Open titles when winning last year’s men’s and women’s singles finals.
Sinner beat American Taylor Fritz 6-3 6-4 7-5, while Sabalenka too overcame a home hope in the form of Jessica Pegular, claiming a 7-5 7-5 victory.
Both the current world No 1s, the pair had differing fortunes in their respective finals in the opening Grand Slam of 2025 at the Australian Open.
Sinner clinched a third slam success with another straight-sets victory over Alexander Zverev, while Sabalenka lost out to Madison Keys in a thrilling three-setter.
